Why Is Matty Cash Not Playing Champions League Games?

Does Matty Cash play in the UEFA Champions League?

Matty Cash is officially registered in Aston Villa's squad for the UEFA Champions League. When Aston Villa returned to Europe's elite competition in the 2024/25 season, Matty Cash was on the bench for marquee fixtures such as the 1–0 home victory against Bayern Munich, waiting for his tournament debut while working his way into manager Unai Emery's continental plans.

During the 2025/26 campaign, Aston Villa did not compete in the Champions League, instead participating in the UEFA Europa League. Matty Cash played a crucial role in that tournament, helping Villa lift the trophy after a 3–0 win over SC Freiburg in the Istanbul final. For the 2026/27 Champions League league phase, Matty Cash was included in the squad to face sides including PSG, FC Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, and Club Brugge.

Why has Matty Cash missed European fixtures for Aston Villa?

Matty Cash has been omitted from certain European line-ups primarily due to muscular setbacks and tactical workload management:

1. Muscle injuries: In early September 2026, Matty Cash sustained a muscle issue that put his availability for the Champions League opener against Club Brugge in serious doubt. A previous calf injury had also forced him off at half-time against Chelsea in March 2026. For a full breakdown of his fitness record, visit the Matty Cash injury history guide.
2. Gradual return to action: Unai Emery often chooses not to rush the Poland defender back from injury. Following his September 2026 issue, Cash was eased in with a substitute appearance against Tottenham (3–2) on 19 September 2026.
3. Squad depth at right-back: Aston Villa signed right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka in August 2026, providing Emery with another quality option and enabling frequent rotation between Premier League and European matchdays.

How does Unai Emery manage Matty Cash's workload?

Matty Cash committed his long-term future to Villa Park by signing a contract extension through 2029 in October 2025. Given the high physical demands of his role, manager Unai Emery carefully monitors Cash's recovery periods during three-game weeks. Alternating starts across domestic and European fixtures helps prevent recurring soft-tissue injuries.
