Chapter 12, 2025–26, Villa Park, Birmingham
European Glory and Club Recognition
The 2025–26 season brought Matty Cash historic European silverware and recognition as Aston Villa's player of the season.
Opening night at St James' Park
On 16 August 2025, Matty Cash kicked off his campaign for Aston Villa by playing the full 90 minutes at right-back in the opening Premier League fixture against Newcastle United. The match at St James' Park in Newcastle upon Tyne ended in a 0–0 draw. This solid start under manager Unai Emery laid the foundation for another demanding season across both domestic and European competitions.
The decisive strike against Manchester City and a new deal
The defining moment of the early autumn came on 26 October 2025 at Villa Park in Birmingham. In the 19th minute against Manchester City, Matty Cash scored the only goal of the game, sealing a famous 1–0 Premier League victory. Just a day later, on 27 October 2025, the club announced a contract extension running until 30 June 2029. His consistent performances throughout October earned him the accolade of Aston Villa's Player of the Month.
Resilience against Manchester United and recovery
On 21 December 2025, Cash started in a 2–1 home win against Manchester United at Villa Park. The match proved eventful: during first-half stoppage time, he lost possession in the build-up to United's equaliser, but he redeemed himself after the break by blocking a dangerous shot to preserve the victory. After a brief spell on the sidelines, manager Unai Emery confirmed on 20 February 2026 ahead of the fixture against Leeds United that Cash had returned to training and was back in contention.
Istanbul glory and recognition from The Athletic
The spring brought intense Premier League tests, including a 1–4 defeat to Chelsea and a 4–2 win over Liverpool where he received yellow cards. However, the ultimate reward arrived on the European stage. On 20 May 2026 in Istanbul, Matty Cash played the full match as Aston Villa triumphed 3–0 against SC Freiburg in the UEFA Europa League final, lifting the European trophy despite receiving a yellow card in the 21st minute. In recognition of his tireless defensive efforts and consistency throughout the campaign, British daily newspaper The Athletic named him Aston Villa's player of the season in June 2026, setting the stage for an August UEFA Super Cup clash against Paris Saint-Germain.
