Does Matty Cash Speak Polish? Language Barrier and Lessons

Does Matty Cash speak Polish?

Despite representing the Poland national team since 2021, Matty Cash does not speak Polish fluently. The Aston Villa right-back has admitted in numerous interviews that the Polish language is incredibly complex and remains a significant hurdle for him.

Cash is able to use basic polite phrases such as "dzień dobry" (good morning) and "dziękuję" (thank you). He has also picked up a few simple football expressions like "podaj mi piłkę" (pass me the ball) and the humorous "kopnę i strzelę bramkę" (I will kick and score a goal). However, on the pitch and in the dressing room, he communicates almost exclusively in English.

Intensive Polish Lessons and the Struggle with Grammar

Many supporters wonder if the defender has ever tried to fully learn the language. In March 2026, speaking to Stan Sport Football, Cash revealed that he had embarked on an intensive study programme. He hired a private Polish tutor and committed to two-hour lessons every second day.

Unfortunately, the venture was unsuccessful. Cash candidly explained that after each gruelling two-hour session, he would immediately forget everything he had just learned. Alongside the sheer difficulty of the language, he also cited a lack of free time due to his demanding football schedule.

"Jeden, dwa, trzy, siedem" – A Funny Story from Jan Urban

Cash's language barrier has occasionally led to light-hearted moments. In September 2025, Poland national team manager Jan Urban shared an entertaining anecdote on the Prawda Futbolu YouTube channel.

During a training drill, the manager instructed the players to count their passes out loud up to twenty. Cash decided to give it a go in Polish, shouting out: "Jeden, dwa, trzy, siedem..." (One, two, three, seven). His numerical leap amused the entire squad and boosted team spirit. While Urban praised Cash's positive attitude, he joked that the defender still needs to work on mastering basic numbers and tactical commands. In daily duties, Cash is assisted by a translator when communicating with Urban, but talks to his teammates in English.

How the Language Barrier Protects Him from Media Drama

In November 2025, Cash made a surprising revelation, pointing out that not understanding Polish actually has its benefits. He explained that he considers himself lucky because he cannot read Polish media reports or online commentary.

Cash observed that Polish football often generates far more negative energy and media "drama" than is typical in England. By remaining oblivious to the press—such as the heavy media storm surrounding the captain's armband dispute in June 2025—he is able to stay happy, calm, and fully focused on his performances.

Looking for a Polish Partner to Help Him Learn

The language barrier also affects Cash's personal life. In early 2026, during interviews with Polish outlets such as Super Express and Interia Sport, he admitted that he struggles when local female fans try to strike up a conversation. Due to the language barrier, he can only reply in English with "I don't know what you're saying," which he finds frustrating.

However, the defender joked that he would love to find a Polish girlfriend or wife, describing Polish women as beautiful. He expressed hope that having a Polish partner would finally provide him with the ultimate motivation to master the language once and for all. Up until now, his partners have been from the United Kingdom.
